Head football coach Gary Andersen will "mutually part" with Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State Beavers head football coach Gary Andersen and the university have decided to “mutually part,” according to a release issued Monday from the athletic department.

Oregon State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes made the announcement.

"I thank Gary for his many contributions to our student-athletes, OSU Athletics and Oregon State University," Barnes said in the release. "OSU football has advanced significantly in many ways during Gary's tenure here, including in our facilities and student-athlete academic performance. This program is poised for success on and off the field."

Andersen is released from all future contract obligations and payments, OSU said.

He was under contract through the 2021 football season.

Andersen said that waiving his contract is the correct decision, after having discussions with Barnes. He said leaving the program will allow the players to “move forward and concentrate on the rest of the season.”

“Coaching is not about the mighty dollar. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Success comes when all parties involved are moving in the same direction,” Andersen said in the release.

Barnes said Andersen agreed to waive his contract for the right reasons and praised Andersen for the honorable person that he is.

A national search for a new head football coach will begin immediately. The new coach will be appointed for the 2018 season.

Assistant coach Cory Hall will serve as interim head coach in the meantime.

Oregon State University says they admire Andersen for leading the football program to unprecedented academic success during his time with the team.
