Contemplating the Fleshwarper Part I...

Publish date: 2024-08-12
I'm in a stint of making characters for fun. They usually end up as NPC's I pull out later, occasionally serve as outlines for PC's in the rare chance I get to play instead of DM.

And so, this time around I'm toying with the Fleshwarper. Relying a bit on the info compiled in This Thread and alot from the info compiled in This Thread.

Before I get fancy about the PrC itself, my first thought is the character build to enter the class. What are reasonable/unreasonable/creative/efficient builds to enter the Fleshwarper PrC?

I'm looking at the requirements for the PrC:
Alignment: Any nonlawful
Skills: Heal 4 ranks*, Knowledge (arcana) 8 ranks
Feat: Graft Flesh
Special: Summon Familiar class feature

*Now it's important to note that the Graft Flesh feat requires 10 ranks in Heal skill, so I get that regardless of the PrC prereqs, a PC enters this at level 8 (unless using a reasonable alternative, see #5 below.) This Thread points out this problem between the class and the feat prereqs.

But as I look at the prereqs tonight, for the first time it occurs to me this character may be better served as a Divine Caster instead of an Arcane. 10 ranks in Heal practically screams Divine, and the Summon Familiar is the only really Arcane requirement.

So, I have a few options, and would love all your input to weight the pros and cons of each:

1-Go Wizard, find a way to get those 10 Heal skill ranks, possibly a Divine or other-heal-as-a-class-skill dip.

2-Go (a) Cleric (b) Archivist (c) Druid (d) Healer, take a single dip into (i) Wizard, (ii) Sorcerer. Arcivist7/Wizard1 seems the most obvious choice and if that was so, I'd consider a Wizard Variant that lost Scribe Scroll for an alternate feature since Archivist already gets it. However I'd be open to other multiclass possibilities.

3-Find a way to acquire a familiar through a variant or feat that will allow me to stay a pure Divine class without needing the single level dip. I don't know if this is possible.

4-Consider an Artificer, Warlock or Dragonfire Adept, who can also benefit from the Fleshwarper's +1 level of existing spellcasting class and consider houseruling the Obtain Familiar feat to meet the prereq.

5-Try to Houserule that Magic of Eberron's Deathless Fleshgrafter (prereqs: Aereni elf, Knowledge (religion) 2 ranks, caster level 5th) ~or~ Eldeen Plantgrafter (Prereqs: Knowledge (nature) 4 ranks, caster level 5th) ~or~ Elemental Grafter (Prereqs: Knowledge (the planes) 2 ranks, caster level 5th) can be substituted for the Fleshwarper's Graft Flesh feat requirement since these feats accomplish the exact same thing, allowing entrance to the class at level 6. This option still has to wrestle with Summon Familiar, but by removing the Heal 10 ranks requirement, a pure Arcane caster can get into the PrC with only 4 ranks in Heal. I'd abandon the Divine caster idea with this route and would probably go straight Wizard because they can pick up an Item Creation feat, which these three are, at level 5.

Since there doesn't appear to be a Fleshwarper Handbook, I might just need to take the thoughts and contributions from this thread and others and make my own. Any links to additional previous discussions on the topic would be appreciated.
